Neighborhood Narratives: Barnaby Woods
Barnaby Woods is in the Northwest quadrant of Washington, D.C., between Rock Creek Park and Montgomery County, Maryland. It is entirely residential, with no commercial zoning, and the housing is dominated by 1930s colonial homes on large parcels of land. Development of the area began in 1934 on the 23 acre tract in Chevy Chase, D.C. Using comprehensive landscaping plans, the original beauty of the area was preserved from the beginning.
The old, massive trees of Barnaby Woods define its atmosphere as the leafy scenery makes up a great deal of its desirability. Locals understand that with these giant trees comes some inconvenience as damage to them can cause temporary power outages and other nuisances, but are content because of the added value and the feeling of a well-established community.
