Neighborhood Narrative: Takoma
Takoma, a neighborhood in northern D.C., is diverse and generally populated by middle-class families. Known for being eclectic, the atmosphere in the neighborhood is liberal and civically involved.
Originally developed in 1883 as a commuter suburb by Benjamin Franklin Gilbert, the new neighborhood’s community promoted vegetarianism and clean living. This core of progressive thought has remained throughout the history of the area and into today. Locals enjoy the green and leafy neighborhood and have fought hard to preserve its older charm, including colonials, Cape Cod-style homes and bungalows, most of which were built between 1920 and 1950. Takoma housing is still reasonably priced, although the trend seems upward at this point.
Takoma lacks somewhat in commercial amenities, particularly with bars and restaurants in mind, but is close enough to downtown’s variety to make its positive attributes, including proximity to Rock Creek Park, family and community friendly atmosphere, and Takoma Community Center (free for D.C. residents) outweigh the potential negatives.
